Asylum on Saturday November 14th, our eagerly awaited big metal night, will be one of the best productions of fierce, furious and filthy music the Live Lounge has ever hosted. One of the bands due to appear on the night, Nailed To The Furnace, has had to pull out. The remaining five bands, Bulletproof, Chaos Theory, Nocturnum, We Bury Our Own, and Brutus Stonefist from Guernsey, are joined by special guest DJ Danny Parkes. Doors open at nine o’clock.

Fantastic work from the desktop of pop artist extraordinaire, Mark Evans

JMCT, Music Scene and Asylum have joined forces to present Brobots! with Lee Downie and The Mulburys at Live Lounge on Saturday November 21st.

Brobots! were the subject of a recent profile in Gallery. With forthcoming appearances for Club Kamikaze at Live Lounge on November 13th and Hadouken at Liquid on November 28th, they are the 100% synthetic boy band that all of Jersey has come to love. Lee Downie aka Jackson Lee, beat box champion, last played for Asylum at the Oxjam Jersey event in July and impressed the audience there with a unique mix of hip hop and acoustic guitar playing. The Mulburys recorded a set of songs with producer Sam Falle this summer. Their sophisticated, punchy power pop is laden with lush grooves and irresistible hooks.

James Evans explains the inspiration for this show, “Instead of donating the money to charity as we have for the last twenty JMCT gigs we will be using any money we make this time to put an Asylum CD out next year and hope to start raising cash to put bands in the studio to record.”

Metal Noise, Punk Boys and Girls

Metal Noise, Punk Boys and Girls

Six very heavy bands, with styles ranging from hard core punk to death metal, are performing at this rare Saturday booking for Asylum at Live Lounge.

Brutus Stonefist

Formed in Summer 2007 on Guernsey, Brutus Stonefist have the sole intention of writing riffs to make your hair stand on end, beat downs that make you want to run through brick walls, and breakdowns so brutal you won’t even notice that your best friend just smashed your neck. Their sound is described as the biggest, baddest bar brawl ever!

Their appearance on this night marks three-in-a-row for different acts from Guernsey working with Asylum. Brutus Stonefist are Tom Domaille (vocals), Nick Schofield (guitar), Mark Mercier (guitar), James Ogier (bass), and Paul Etasse (drums). Their reputation for extreme entertainment precedes them.

Nocturnum

Returning to the Live Lounge for the third time this year, the darker than dark black metal supergroup that is Nocturnum have added to their lineup a second guitarist, Craig. He joins Midgard Morningstar (vocals), Alex (guitar), and Blake (drums). They are apparently still searching for a new bassist but the evidence of their last show was that the effortlessly cool pyrotechnic style of Alex’s virtuosic playing made that seem an irrelevance.

Bulletproof

No news yet of the release date of their new album but there is a set of three videos on YouTube in which they discuss it and other things: Bulletproof video playlist. In between the chat there is footage from their opening set at the Bedell Group Ecuador Challenge show back in May. Bulletproof are Steve Creedy (guitar and vocals), Eddie Eversfield (drums) and Lee Gosselin (bass and vocals).

We Bury Our Own

Awesome, progressive, and dark with more than a hint of maniacal fun, We Bury Our Own aim to please with an approach to thrash metal that is both studiously technical and instantly appealing. Rob (vocals), Jordan (guitar), Andreas (guitar), Kyle (bass), and Chris (drums) make an impressive team.

Chaos Theory

Chaos Theory are Josh Feldman (lead guitar), Joey Conway (rhythm guitar), Kyle Jones (bass), Robert Telfer (drums), and Matt Ahier (vocals). Their new track previewed at MySpace, Rash, is a pile-driving epic with drums shifting dazzlingly between half and double tempos and a wall of guitar riffs that is dense sludge hewn into metrically precise patterns. Its excellent production quality is also worth noting.

Nailed To The Furnace

After a triumphant performance headlining at Branchage In The Asylum, Nailed To The Furnace return to demonstrate their mastery of a uniquely stark and savagely wrought metal style. Work on their album continues despite its producer’s recent injuries. Get well soon, Kyle.

"... drink beer, fuck fall out boy ..."

With song titles such as Tomorrow’s Whores and Prepare For Death, you know from the get-go that you’re in for an uncompromising attack on polite sensibilities with Gift Wrapped Fist.

They are Angelo Vidigal (vocals), Danny Norris (drums), Sam Marriott (bass), Roy Taylor (guitar) and Matt Daly (guitar). Based in Burton On Trent, and coming from the shores of Jersey, Gift Wrapped Fist say they are determined to make their way through ‘the crap that is the metal scene now’ and in doing so demonstrate a taste for derisive nose-thumbing that not even fellow metal musicians can feel safe from. Their music features fuzzed-out guitars slicing through the murk of an aggressive rhythm section, and vocals that are one-part Lemmy to two parts violent tramp. They create a monstrous derangement of lust and anguish, and create something that is radically new with the forms of classic metal. Their performance on July 17th promises to be unmissable.

Metal nights at Asylum are always exciting events due to the loyal support of a heavy music loving crowd recognising that, uniquely in Jersey, the Live Lounge genuinely supports the scene.

Nailed To The Furnace are John Ward (vocals), Lee Raeburn (lead guitar), Andy Thomas (guitar), Molly Warren (bass) and Danny Gallichan (drums). They are a hardcore band aiming to bring a different style of metal to Jersey. I’d sum up that sound by saying it is like a chamber quintet offshoot of Glenn Branca’s symphonic guitar noise orchestra playing relentless, monochordal anthems with ferocious intensity and fronted by a vocalist with real menace.

Bulletproof are the island’s respected punk dons, Steve, Lee and Eddie, committed and vital as ever, all of whom I had the pleasure of interviewing for Asylum on YouTube recently. Check out the interview and performance videos here.

Dave is known among those of sophisticated music tastes as a member of the devastatingly fine Jersey-based band Falenizza Horsepower, alongside Steve Hutchins and Esther Rose Parkes. Steve has written an invitation to what will be a night of unforgettable musical entertainment.

Steve Hutchins’ Epicurean Introduction to Contributing Artists

If you want to run with the maxim variety is the spice of life then you want to be heading down to the Live Lounge this coming Sunday (May 24th) to feast on the spicy smorgasbord of delights being served up for your aural pleasure – all in the name of charity. Specifically raising cash for Bedell Group Ecuador Challenge 2009.

Salem’s Lot will provide a somewhat hefty but essential starter – these young lads regularly dish up large servings of heavy noise to slavering crowds across the island. A good solid band with the right attitude who get better and better each time they pluck/straddle their respective instruments.

After such a heavy starter you’ll no doubt be feeling a little parched. Luckily The Mighty Bulletproof are here to whet your whistle. Bulletproof are nothing like a fine wine. They don’t improve with age. They have always been this awesome. Few if any local bands have been around as long as Bulletproof and can boast such a fine vintage. Such staying power may explain their recent faux-knighthood seeing them upgrade themselves with the prefix ‘The Mighty’. Spitting fury about local politics and whatever else rattles singer Steve’s cage, they always deliver. Never failing to get the crowd moving with their high-velocity razor sharp bursts of energy, they will leave you like the greedy wretch Oliver Twist asking for more.

A period of respite will follow firstly with the sumptuous delights of Esther Rose Parkes. Part of the quieter section of the line up but no less engaging, Esther’s  impassioned songwriting and compelling vocals take you to distinguished and ethereal territory. She is an enormous talent so catch her before she disappears off on various jaunts to European festivals and gigs over the summer and beyond, supporting the release of her forthcoming album.

Cling on to your serviette because you’ll be drooling in amazement at the mind-bending performance of Guernsey’s Jamie Lee. If Heston Blumenthal played guitar he’d sound nothing like this, but his similarly unorthodox and inventive approach to his craft would find kinship with Jamie Lee. Jamie bashes his guitar in all sorts of places, both hands spidering their way all over the strings, resulting in a surprisingly soothing but incredibly emotive and unique result. If you think you have seen this kind of thing before, you are wrong.

The Porcupine Effect will now turn up the heat and get things bubbling with their upbeat, tight and occasionally oddball grooves. They are extremely talented and depressingly young. If there’s a Battle of the Bands event going on you don’t want to be going head-to-head with these guys as they seem to make a habit of winning them. If you’ve seen them before you’ll know exactly why. If they are new to you, expect a melting pot of funky/proggy experiments and a performance as sharp as the spines of their namesake.

If you’re feeling pretty full with such multifariousness, remember to leave a little room for Falenizza Horsepower. As a result of some recent experiments with songstress Esther Rose Parkes, ‘the Horsepower’ currently present themselves as a three-piece. This fusion loses none of their previous tendencies to jump from one noisy idea to another mellow moment but brings a more cultured approach with delicious results.

Now go and puke up this crazy concoction all over James St. With a big grin on your face and take pride in the fact your debauchery is going to a good cause.

Bon Apetit.

Jersey Hospice Care and Bedell Group Ecuador Challenge 2009

Jersey Hospice Care is a specialist palliative nursing service which provides holistic care free of charge, for cancer and motor neurone disease patients. It recognises and respects that each person is unique and aims to provide palliative care which meets their needs. This care is provided in the community, in the Day Hospice and In-Patient Unit and continues for the family in their bereavement. Jersey Hospice Care is committed to providing a professional service of the highest standard to all those entrusted to our care. Having been established in 1982, Jersey Hospice Care celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007.

It currently costs around £6,000 a day to run all their services and, as they recieve no funding from the States of Jersey, rely entirely on the generosity of people in Jersey supporting them by donating to, and fundraising for their cause.

Here’s a brief description of the challenge that Dave and his teammates face, from the pages of the Jersey Hospice Care website:

The challenge is to cycle from dense tropical rainforest, over the Andes and down into the steaming jungle and banana plantations of the Pacific coast. Cyclists will travel through every type of landscape and through most weather conditions. In the jungle it is humid and hot with occasional downpours and high up in the Andes it can be cloudy and cold. On the Pacific coast it is hot and very humid. This is a tough challenge. Participants will have to tackle the heat in the jungle, the cold in the mountains and the huge climbs through the Andes and of course the altitude.

Get On Your Bike and Ride!

I asked Dave Spars about how he came to be involved in the epic challenge, and why he wanted to do it, and this is what he said:

About November time last year Angie, my girlfriend, mentioned to me that there was a presentation at the Pomme d’Or Hotel about cycling across Ecuador for Jersey Hospice Care. Did I want to come along and see if I fancied it? Angie seemed really quite exited about it so I thought I’d go along, but if I’m honest I didn’t fancy it at that time. They talked about previous trips they had done, and I found there was a lot of people there who had done this before. I started getting very interested. It’s gonna be tough work, and require lots of training (which I’ve only just started) but it looked like an amazing opportunity to see that part of the world. As a bonus, it will raise awareness and money for Jersey Hospice Care – a very worthy cause. So we put down our deposit and started fundraising and that’s the reason I asked Chris from Asylum and Flavio from the Live Lounge if they’d help me by putting on a night, and good news, it’s happening!

Nocturnum are Midgard Morningstar (vocals), Alex (guitars), Blake (drums) and Muz (bass).

They are a black metal band with a titanic, hyper-gothic sound and a predilection for press releases written in Jerriais, having been writing, performing and recording together since 2007. Work on their first album, Darker Than Darkness – À la Glouaithe dé Dgiâbl’ye, is nearing completion. Samples from it posted on their MySpace profile indicate the shape of things to come; a wall of tightly woven guitar and bass motifs with superbly technical, progressive drumming and the kinds of vocals that follow you into nightmares. Could it turn out to be a masterpiece long-awaited by fans of heavy music since … well, the last Bulletproof album?

Nocturnum have a very loyal following in Jersey, and it is no exaggeration to say their upcoming show for Asylum at Live Lounge is one of the most eagerly awaited of the year so far.

So to Bulletproof, who are Steve (guitar and vocals), Lee (bass) and Eddie (drums). They’ve worked with Function Records, a London based independent record label, over the years, to produce a series of releases that are generally regarded as some of the finest, most socially aware and artistically honest rock ‘n’ roll ever to come from the Channel Islands. Making great records is one thing, but the true Bulletproof experience is a live one, when they tear the roof off any venue with their unsurpassed punk agitations and viscerally stunning musicianship.

We Bury Our Own are Rob (vocals), Jordan (guitar and vocals), Andreas (guitar), Kyle (bass), and Chris (drums).

The band is made up of former members of Labrat, You Might End Up Dead, Dumbass and Road Of Bones. They are masters of thrash and death metal with an emphasis on intricate arrangements and a wickedly energetic style of performance. Add dense horror atmospherics and a desire to get their audiences, in their words, ‘dancing erotically’, and we have a fine example of how Jersey’s hardcore metal scene is a sophisticated and unstoppable force.
